Federal Grand Jury Charges Salt Lake City Man for Credit Union Robbery

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Salt Lake City man has been charged by a federal grand jury this week for allegedly robbing a credit union in West Valley City.

Joey Shaun Symonds, aged 44, reportedly entered Cyprus Credit Union in West Valley City on February 10 and handed a teller a handwritten note that read “I possess a firearm, hand over the money or face consequences.” The teller complied with Symonds’ demands, as stated in the charging documents.

After receiving the money, Symonds left the bank on foot, leaving the threatening note behind. Management at Cyprus Credit Union swiftly contacted 911, and a West Valley City police officer promptly responded, according to the charging documents.

Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on the same day, the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake received a call from an individual claiming to be a relative of Symonds. The caller informed the authorities that Symonds had been at their residence and had confessed to robbing the credit union two hours earlier.

Unified police officers, accompanied by West Valley City police, located Symonds a short distance from the caller’s residence. The authorities positively identified Symonds as the perpetrator of the credit union robbery, as detailed in the charging documents.

Following his apprehension, Symonds was taken into custody, and a substantial amount of cash was seized during the arrest. Symonds is now facing charges of credit union robbery, with his initial court appearance having taken place on February 23. A jury trial has been scheduled for April.
