Cyprus Credit Union Robbery Suspect Indicted by Federal Grand Jury

LONDON — Following the recent robbery at a Cyprus Credit Union branch in West Valley, a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City has formally indicted Joey Shaun Symond, aged 44, for the crime.

The incident took place on February 10 at the Cyprus Credit Union located at 3432 W. 3500 South. According to a police affidavit, Symond entered the bank and handed a teller a handwritten note demanding money, claiming to have a gun.

After the robbery, a relative of Symond contacted the Unified Police Department and reported that Symond was at their residence admitting to the crime. Law enforcement officers quickly responded to the call, positively identified Symond as the suspect, and recovered a significant amount of stolen cash during his arrest.

It was revealed that Symond has a criminal history dating back to 1999, including a previous arrest for robbery in 2009, a charge that was ultimately dismissed without prejudice.

A two-day jury trial is scheduled to take place in Salt Lake City on April 26 to further address the charges against Symond.

The Department of Justice highlighted that this case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement agencies and communities to enhance public safety.
