Details of the Capture

The Iraqi National Intelligence Service did not disclose the exact location of the capture, but released a video showing the two men aboard a small plane. The detainees, identified as Issam Abed Ali Sueidan and Bashir Abed Ali Sueidan, later appeared in a video wearing yellow uniforms and speaking about their roles within the Islamic State group.

Confessions and Crimes

Issam Abed Ali Sueidan, also known as Abu Zeid, was a main propagandist for the group in the central Iraqi city of Fallujah. In the video, he admitted to beheading an Iraqi soldier in Fallujah and producing propaganda videos for the group. Bashir Abed Ali Sueidan, or Abu Ahmad, was in charge of telecommunications in Fallujah and claimed responsibility for encrypting the communications of IS officials.

Current Situation with Islamic State

Despite sustained counterterrorism operations, the Islamic State group still commands between 5,000 and 7,000 members across Iraq and Syria. The group has reduced its attacks to facilitate recruiting and reorganization, according to U.N. experts. In northeast Syria, approximately 11,000 suspected IS fighters are being held in facilities of the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

Conclusion

The capture and confession of these two Islamic State members serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by the extremist group in the region. With the cooperation of international partners and the dedication of Iraqi security forces, efforts to combat terrorism continue to make progress.
