Investigation Launched into Tragic Death of Student at University of Georgia Campus

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the untimely death of a young woman on the grounds of the University of Georgia (UGA) after she failed to return from her morning run, the institution announced on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified by the coroner’s office as 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, a student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing campus in Athens.

UGA police were alerted to the situation after receiving a call from a concerned individual who reported that their friend had not come back from a run at the intramural fields. Upon investigation, Riley was discovered in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick with visible injuries. Despite efforts to provide emergency assistance, she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

In a letter to students, the school revealed that foul play is suspected in the incident, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of the campus community remains their top priority.

UGA has taken the precautionary measure of cancelling all classes until Monday, with the Augusta University College of Nursing also suspending classes on Friday.

The campus, typically known for its beauty and tranquillity, has been shaken by the event, with students expressing fear and concern over the situation. UGA student Izzy Whitesides shared, “The fact that the person hasn’t been caught yet is really scary. Hence why I had somebody come walk me back to my car.” Another student, Alena Wiggins, added, “It’s really beautiful and peaceful, and now I feel like it’s tainted. It’s like, scary, a little bit.”

Ongoing Investigation and Police Response

UGA Police Chief Jeffery Clark has urged the public to steer clear of the area where the body was found as campus police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department collaborate on the investigation. While a suspect has not yet been identified, authorities are actively looking into the case, assuring that there is no immediate threat to public safety.

Clark stated, “This is a tragic day. My investigators will be working this case day and night, and they will be looking at every camera that we have.”

The university also referenced a separate incident that occurred just hours earlier, involving the death of a student in Brumby Hall. While the cause of death was not disclosed by UGA, the student’s high school alma mater confirmed that it was a case of suicide.

Clarifying the events, Clark emphasised that the two deaths are unrelated. Riley’s passing marks the first on-campus homicide at UGA in 41 years.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with pertinent information about the incident to contact the UGA Police Department at (706) 542-2200.

The University of Georgia offers round-the-clock mental health crisis support to all students. Those in need of assistance can reach out by calling 706-542-2273.
