Leaking propane tank identified as cause of Sterling home explosion
STERLING, Va. – Investigators have concluded their on-site investigation into a devastating home explosion in Loudoun County, which tragically claimed the life of a firefighter and left many others injured. The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue’s Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the explosion at 347 Silver Ridge Dr. in Sterling was caused by a leaking 500-gallon underground propane tank.
The leaked propane seeped into and around the house, ultimately being ignited. However, the exact cause of the ignition remains unknown, with investigators continuing to work diligently on this complex case.
The Fire Marshal’s Office released a statement saying, “This is an extremely complex investigation, and the incident will remain under investigation until further notice. The official cause classification will be communicated when the investigation is complete.”
A total of 14 individuals were injured in the explosion, including Sterling Volunteer Firefighter Trevor Brown, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. One firefighter remains hospitalized and is in stable condition at the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital.

The explosion also caused significant property damage to at least six nearby residences, with three of them being deemed uninhabitable. The estimated total damages amount to approximately £2.5 million.
Neighbours John and Stephanie Pavich shared their shock and disbelief, stating, “It’s just shocking. Like, it still smells like a fire and it’s been a week. It’s just unbelievable. It’s almost unimaginable … I mean you’re seeing people’s personal belongings hanging in trees. Dresser drawers and clothing and insulation. It’s just horrible.”
The community is coming together to support those affected by the tragedy, with a GoFundMe campaign launched for one of the survivors. The funeral for firefighter Brown is scheduled for Monday, March 4 in Leesburg.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging caution and vigilance in handling propane tanks and ensuring proper maintenance to prevent similar incidents in the future.
