The individual in question has been identified as 39-year-old Haneef Cooper. He was spotted and taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at SEPTA’s Frankford Transportation Center for further questioning.

Cooper has been charged in connection with a total of six vandalism incidents, which include targeted attacks on two churches and several other businesses within the city.

Damage to Historic Churches and Businesses

Among the properties affected by the vandalism spree was the Saint John Neumann Shrine in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties. The shrine reported that on February 20, three stained-glass windows were broken by rocks and a brick, resulting in an estimated damage cost of around $20,000.

“The areas that were broken will require extensive work to repair,” stated Father Micael Cunningham, the pastor at the Saint John Neumann Shrine.

Cooper was also linked to another historic church, Mother Bethel AME, located on the 400 block of South 6th Street in Society Hill. The church reported that their stained glass windows, dating back to the 1800s, were shattered, with an estimated repair cost of $15,000.

Suspect’s Criminal History

Police revealed that Cooper has a prior history of vandalism and has faced charges of criminal mischief in the past. Since 2011, he has been in and out of jail for similar offenses.

Cooper now faces six counts each of criminal mischief and possession of an instrument of crime for the recent incidents. Additionally, he has been charged with institutional vandalism for the attacks on the places of worship.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are currently working to determine if Cooper is linked to any other instances of vandalism that may have occurred in the area. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the police at 215-686-TIPS.
