Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Child Pornography and Attempted Enticement of a Minor
SEATTLE, Wash. — A 28-year-old man from Bellingham, Washington, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for possession of child pornography and attempted enticement of a minor. Clayton Harker was arrested in December 2022 after he arrived at a Bellingham hotel with the intention of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. However, the ‘girl’ was fictitious, and Harker had been communicating with undercover Homeland Security Investigation agents.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Richard Jones expressed his concerns, stating, “The court finds these cases extremely troubling. Fictitious individual or not, you had a clear intention to act on your desires.”
The investigation into Harker’s activities began when law enforcement was looking into a different Snapchat user who was pressuring young individuals for explicit images. This led them to Harker, who had been communicating with the aforementioned user. In November 2022, Harker started conversing with an undercover agent who claimed to have an 8-year-old niece that Harker could molest. Additionally, Harker also communicated with another agent who posed as the young girl. Harker was apprehended before he could carry out his plans at the hotel.
Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Hampton requested a 30-year prison sentence for Harker, highlighting that Harker admitted to soliciting minors for sexually explicit imagery over the internet and using threats and extortion to obtain such material. Hampton emphasized the devastating impact Harker had on the lives of vulnerable minors and the need for lengthy confinement followed by close supervision.

Following his prison term, Harker will be on supervised release for 15 years and will be required to register as a sex offender. The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in collaboration with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Hampton prosecuted the case.
