Man Fatally Struck by Car in Southwest Charlotte

A tragic incident occurred in southwest Charlotte late Friday night, resulting in the death of a man who was hit by a car. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that the victim, identified as Christopher Ryan Starr, was struck while riding his bicycle on South Tryon Street.

Details of the Incident

According to detectives, the crash took place just before 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Steele Creek Road. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision had fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Upon arrival, officers found Starr lying unresponsive on the sidewalk next to his damaged bike. Despite the efforts of emergency responders from the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC, Starr succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Factors Contributing to the Tragedy

Investigators determined that Starr was cycling in the outbound lane of South Tryon Street wearing a reflective vest and a flashing light on his helmet. It was reported that Christian R. Diaz Castillo was driving a white Mazda CX-5 in the same direction as Starr when the collision occurred.

Authorities stated that speeding and reckless driving played significant roles in the incident. Castillo, who initially left the scene but was later apprehended by law enforcement, now faces charges of felony hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.
