Retired Periodontist Assaulted While Hiking in Newport Beach
A 69-year-old retired periodontist, Todd Miller, from Corona del Mar, was the victim of a shocking assault while on a training hike in Newport Beach. Miller, an avid hiker, typically enjoys exploring the hills around Crystal Cove State Park but had chosen a different route that day due to impending rain in Orange County.
Miller recounted his harrowing experience, stating that he had ventured from his home to San Joaquin Road and then onto a trail that led him down to Pacific Coast Highway. It was on this trail, near Camino Shores Road, that he was found by Newport Beach police after being struck from behind by an assailant.
Following the incident, Miller woke up in Hoag Hospital with multiple injuries, including scrapes, bruises, and a significant laceration above his left eye. Doctors diagnosed him with minor brain bleeding and fractures, but thankfully, no serious complications were detected.
The suspect, identified as Steven Soliz, 31, has been charged with various offences, including resisting police officers and assault. Soliz has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody pending his next court appearance on Feb. 29.

Despite the traumatic nature of the attack, Miller remains resolute in his belief that this was a random incident. He has expressed gratitude towards the individuals who came to his aid following the assault and plans to meet with them to express his thanks.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Miller stated, “I just feel like I was in a fight and like I’ve been beat up.” The Newport Beach Police Department has refrained from publicly naming Miller as the victim in the case, respecting his privacy during this difficult time.
As the community rallies around Todd Miller in support, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety while enjoying outdoor activities.
