In a surprising verdict, two men have been convicted of murder while a third defendant has been acquitted in the tragic shooting of a Signal Hill man. The victim was lured to an apartment complex near Poly High School under the guise of a weed transaction, only to be robbed and fatally shot.

The Incident

Jalen Jackson, Jahi Jackson, and Saeed Wheeler allegedly convinced 31-year-old Nashon Wall to meet them in the 700 block of Esther Avenue on Feb. 2, 2022, with the intention of robbing him. Prosecutors claim that Jalen fired the fatal shots during the robbery.

The trial against the three defendants focused on surveillance footage from the nearby apartment complex, social media evidence, and phone records. Deputy District Attorney Karen Brako presented compelling evidence linking the defendants to the crime scene.

Surveillance Footage

Surveillance footage captured the three men running away from Wall’s vehicle with guns shortly after the shooting. The video showed the suspects approaching Wall’s car and surrounding it, with Jalen opening the passenger door and Wheeler firing a shot through the windshield.

Arrests and Charges

Wheeler was identified as a suspect in the case after being arrested for an assault with a deadly weapon in Los Angeles. Ballistics tests linked the gun seized from Wheeler to the crime scene. Jalen and Jahi were later taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Courtroom Drama

During closing arguments, Brako emphasized that all three defendants played a role in the murder and robbery. Defense attorneys argued against the robbery allegations, with each defendant maintaining their innocence to varying degrees.

The Verdict

After days of deliberation, Jalen and Wheeler were found guilty of second-degree murder. Jahi, on the other hand, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of possessing a concealed firearm. Each defendant faced additional charges related to firearms possession.

Sentencing

Jahi is scheduled for sentencing on March 19, Jalen on March 21, and Wheeler on March 26. The outcome of the trial has left a community in shock and raised questions about the nature of the crime.
