In a shocking turn of events, the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office has made two arrests in connection to the tragic death of 20-year-old Melody Hoffman. The young woman’s body was discovered at the Amana Lily Lake after deputies responded to a report on Sunday morning.

Hoffman’s boyfriend, 23-year-old McKinley Louisma, was the first to be arrested and charged in connection to her death. Initially facing charges of first-degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony, Louisma is now also charged with first-degree murder.

Court documents reveal chilling details of the events leading up to Hoffman’s death. Louisma confessed to authorities that he, along with 18-year-old Dakota Lyle Van Patten, bound Hoffman with duct tape and forced her into the trunk of his car at Morgan Creek Park in Linn County. Hoffman’s Apple Watch recorded her increasing heartbeat before it abruptly stopped, indicating the moment her heart ceased to beat or the device was turned off. Louisma and Van Patten then allegedly drove around to multiple locations with Hoffman in the trunk before ultimately leaving her at Amana Lily Lake.

Further investigation revealed the gruesome extent of Hoffman’s ordeal. She was reportedly beaten, stabbed, and slashed multiple times before being left at the lake. The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Hoffman’s cause of death was strangulation.

During a search of Van Patten’s residence, investigators discovered a portion of a towing rope believed to have been used in Hoffman’s murder. Additionally, a third individual, 20-year-old Logan Kimpton, has been accused of conspiring with Louisma and Van Patten in the killing of Hoffman.

Prior to the tragic events on the night of February 17, surveillance footage captured Kimpton purchasing two machetes and gloves alongside Louisma and Van Patten. Kimpton later admitted to investigators that he had purchased a machete but backed out of participating in Hoffman’s murder. He confessed to authorities that he had told several people about the planned killing before it took place.

Van Patten and Kimpton have been charged with conspiracy to commit a forcible felony, with Van Patten facing additional charges of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

The community is left reeling from the senseless loss of Melody Hoffman and the shocking revelations surrounding her death. As the investigation continues, authorities are working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and ensure that justice is served for the victim and her loved ones.
