Man Charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon on Airline Flight

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after witnesses reported that he stabbed another passenger on an airline flight and expressed his intention to kill the victim.

The incident took place on a January 24 Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Las Vegas. The man, identified as Julio Alvarez Lopez, allegedly created an improvised weapon by wrapping rubber bands around several pens.

Grand Jury Indictment

A grand jury in Nevada handed down a one-count indictment against Lopez in connection with the attack. The victim, who was revealed to be an off-duty law enforcement officer, was seated with his family across the aisle from Lopez.

According to a witness on the flight, Lopez returned from the restroom and began assaulting the victim by punching him. The victim’s wife and another passenger intervened, urging Lopez to stop his violent actions.

Arrest and Investigation

After being restrained by fellow passengers for the remainder of the flight, Lopez was arrested by Las Vegas police upon landing. An FBI affidavit revealed that Lopez claimed he had never seen the victim before the flight but believed the man was following him with intentions to harm him.

Lopez also mentioned to authorities that he had been evading the mafia for months and was seeking asylum in the United States. The federal magistrate overseeing the case noted that Lopez, a Mexican citizen with a valid passport, is unemployed, homeless, and has no ties to Las Vegas. He was ordered to remain in custody until trial.

Intent to Kill

During the investigation, it was revealed that Lopez had allegedly intended to kill his victim by stabbing him through the eye and into his brain. The victim sustained injuries above his right eye, as depicted in a photograph presented as evidence.

Lopez’s public defender has not yet provided a comment on the case.
