MISSOURI CITY, Texas (KBTX) – Congressman Pete Sessions, Chair of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce, led a bipartisan briefing on Thursday alongside Congressman Al Green (TX-9) and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) to address the prolonged mail delays impacting Texans.

The Missouri City, TX facility, identified as the epicentre of these ongoing issues, has raised concerns among residents and businesses across the Brazos Valley and Central Texas for several months.

Before the briefing, congressional staff conducted an on-site tour of the South Houston Local Processing Center in Missouri City. This first-hand assessment delved into the operational challenges, providing a comprehensive understanding that formed the basis for discussions between USPS officials and the Members of Congress.

Challenges and Solutions

Chairman Pete Sessions stated, “Today’s discussion with USPS officials investigated challenges caused by the Delivering for America plan in the Houston area. Our conversation focused on next steps for meaningful improvement to USPS operations. These postal system challenges are not unique to Texas but are affecting Americans nationwide. I am grateful to my colleagues who joined me today and their demonstrated commitment to resolving these delays and ensuring reliable postal services for all.”

Following the tour, Members of Congress met with reporters to discuss the issues, expressing confidence that the delivery challenges originating from the Missouri City Postal Facility are now a thing of the past. They pledged to revisit the matter if any lingering problems persist.

“Today we received assurance from the post office that they did apologise for the service that has been rendered from this Houston area,” said Sessions.

“Texans deserve better service. We all do. And hopefully, this is the first step to make sure that happens and that people get their mail, their merchandise, their medicines,” Garcia added.

Future Assurance

Rep. Sessions mentioned that postal officials attributed the delays to various factors such as weather, staffing challenges, new equipment and technology, excess mail from the holiday season, and more. Lawmakers believe these issues are now resolved and no longer a concern.

Another focal point addressed by leaders revolved around elections and mail-in ballots. With early voting currently underway, Sessions was assured that individuals opting to mail in their ballots can do so with confidence, as mailing them is no longer expected to be an issue.

Improved Communication

Congress members also issued a challenge to the Postal Service, urging improved communication not only with them but also with the general public.

“While I do want to do everything I can to help and work with the postal service, I don’t have the answers, and I think that if they would just step forward and provide and communicate, I think it would be helpful,” said Green.

“The fix that we have here is one that will involve better dialogue and direct information that will be available not only when there’s a problem but anytime there are service delays that are either expected or that occur, and they will notify key stakeholders. That will include members of Congress, United States, Senate offices that are here or wherever around the country,” Sessions added.

Congressional Action

Congressman Green expressed gratitude to Congressman Sessions for investigating the mail delays in Houston. He highlighted issues arising from a lack of transparency by USPS, leading him and Congresswoman Garcia to submit written questions for consideration of a formal congressional hearing. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia emphasised that the frustration voiced is yielding overdue answers, and they will persist until USPS can reliably deliver services to communities on time.

“I thank Chairman Sessions for his coming to Houston to look into the issues associated with mail delays,” said Congressman Al Green. “I’m also thankful to Congresswoman Garcia and for their participation. Issues associated with delays have been exacerbated by the lack of transparency and an unwillingness by USPS to address the public and the press. As a result, Congresswoman Garcia and I are submitting written questions to USPS such that we may make an informed decision as to whether a request should be made for a formal congressional hearing. Our questions may be found online at https://algreen.house.gov.”

“Today’s discussion made clear that our frustration is getting results, and we are starting to get answers that are long overdue,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. “I thank my colleagues for bringing our staff together to perform the oversight that our constituents deserve. Make no mistake, we will keep coming back until we know USPS can actually deliver for our communities wherever they are at, and do it on time.”
