Jyedon Pollard lost his life after being mauled by a Rottweiler at a motel in Cowra, New South Wales’ Central West. The inquest, which was adjourned until closing submissions, aims to uncover any potential shortcomings in people and organisations that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The devastated family of the young victim gathered outside the Lidcombe Coroner’s Court to pay tribute to Jyedon with a smoking ceremony. Jyedon’s mother, who remains anonymous for legal reasons, expressed her hope that the inquest would bring justice for her son. She vowed to continue fighting for Jyedon’s memory, emphasizing that she wants the community to remember him as a person, not just a victim.

During the proceedings, a picture of the smiling toddler was placed in the courtroom, serving as a poignant reminder of the innocent life lost. Counsel Assisting the Coroner, David Kell, described Jyedon as “dearly loved by family” and highlighted the importance of investigating any potential lapses in safety measures that could have prevented the tragic incident.

The court heard that Jyedon and his mother were staying at a motel arranged by the NSW Department of Community and Justice, which was designated as emergency accommodation. The motel owner’s two dogs, a Rottweiler and a female red healer cross, were involved in the fatal attack. CCTV footage revealed that Jyedon, only two years old, was able to open one of the dog enclosures with ease, leading to the tragic encounter.

Despite efforts to save him, Jyedon succumbed to penetrating injuries to the head and neck caused by multiple dog bites. Both dogs involved in the attack were euthanised following the incident. While there was no prior record of aggressive behaviour by the dogs, questions were raised about the suitability of the accommodation and the presence of animals in temporary housing facilities.

The inquest also heard about the ongoing police investigation into the incident, with Senior Constable Stuart Tydd confirming that the case remains open. The family’s emotional statement, read in court, expressed their anguish over the loss of Jyedon and called for accountability regarding the presence of dangerous animals in public accommodations.

As the inquest continues its deliberations, the family and community seek closure and justice for Jyedon Pollard, whose memory will forever live on in their hearts..
