DOUGLAS COUNTY—Authorities in Douglas County are currently conducting an investigation into the tragic death of a woman, with a suspect already in custody.

At around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, emergency services were alerted to a distressing situation at the unsanctioned camp just north of the city’s approved campsite near 100 Maple, by the Kansas River in Lawrence. Upon arrival, responders discovered the lifeless body of a 51-year-old woman, later identified as Crystal White from Lawrence, who appeared to have sustained stab wounds. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the discovery, patrol officers swiftly initiated interviews with potential witnesses, prompting the investigations unit to spring into action. A suspect was promptly identified, leading to an extensive search of the surrounding area. To aid in the investigation, the Lawrence Police deployed their Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle (Drone) and Patrol Service Dog Units.

By 9:00 a.m., law enforcement officers successfully located a person of interest in Burcham Park and took him into custody for questioning. The investigative teams are now meticulously sifting through evidence, liaising with witnesses and associates, and collecting valuable information to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.

Despite the severity of the situation, authorities have reassured the public that there is no imminent danger to the community linked directly to this crime.

Tragically, they discovered the lifeless body of a 51-year-old woman inside a tent, believed to have suffered fatal stab wounds. The victim was later identified as Crystal White from Lawrence.

By approximately 9:00 a.m., officers from the Lawrence Police Department managed to locate a potential suspect in Burcham Park and took him into custody for further investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are being treated as a homicide, and authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for justice.
