Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 22-year-old farmer from Punjab tragically lost his life at the Khanauri border crossing in Sangrur district on Wednesday, succumbing to a head injury sustained during clashes with security personnel from Haryana. The incident occurred as farmers resumed their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march in pursuit of a minimum support price (MSP) guarantee, only to be met with tear gas shells and rubber bullets allegedly fired by the Haryana Police.

Reports from Punjab officials indicate that a total of 26 individuals were injured at the Khanauri and Shambhu border crossings, where barricades were erected by the Haryana Police to impede the progress of the protesting farmers. The deceased farmer, identified as Shubhkaran Singh from Balloh village in Bathinda, was pronounced dead at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. The exact cause of his head injury remains unclear, with conflicting accounts of a rubber bullet striking him during the confrontation.

Dr Harnam Singh Rekhi, the Medical Superintendent of Rajindra Hospital, disclosed that Shubhkaran arrived at the hospital with a head injury, possibly from a bullet, pending confirmation through a post-mortem examination. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his condolences and vowed to hold accountable those responsible for Shubhkaran’s tragic demise, promising a thorough investigation and the filing of an FIR against the implicated officers.

In the wake of the incident, the Haryana Police denied any fatalities, dismissing reports of the farmer’s death as mere rumor. However, they acknowledged injuries sustained by two policemen and one protester at the Data Singh-Khanori border, all of whom were receiving medical treatment. Despite the tragic turn of events, the farmers opted to suspend their march to Delhi for two days, opting to continue their sit-in protest while reassessing the situation on Friday.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda appealed for peace and a return to dialogue, emphasizing the government’s willingness to address the farmers’ grievances, including the MSP demand, crop diversification, stubble management, and ongoing FIRs against protesters. Farmer leaders, including Sarvan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, faced teargas shelling at the Shambhu border while attempting to engage in talks with Central ministers.
