Escalating Violence
Violence in the West Bank has been on the rise, particularly following the Gaza war sparked by Hamas’ attack on October 7. The region has seen hundreds of casualties in recent months.
Israeli far-right ministers have called for a firm security response and increased settlement construction in response to the attack. They argue for stricter restrictions on movement in the West Bank to ensure the safety of Israeli residents.
The West Bank Conflict
The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, is home to around 475,000 Jewish settlers living in settlements considered illegal by the international community. The Palestinian population in the region is approximately 2.9 million.
The Palestinians aspire to establish an independent state in the West Bank, a goal that is being discussed by the international community amidst the ongoing violence.
Political Response
Israel’s parliament recently backed a proposal opposing unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, emphasizing the country’s stance on the conflict.
The Gaza war, which began with Hamas’ attack in October, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
As the conflict continues, the international community is closely monitoring developments in the region to seek a resolution to the longstanding dispute.
