On February 22, DC Superior Court Judge Robert Okun agreed to vacate and reschedule a homicide trial date set to start in three days in connection with a tragic incident that took place on the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, NE.

The Incident

Around May 15, 2021, on the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, NE, an unfortunate incident unfolded where four individuals were shot, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Lester Howard.

The Suspect

Juan Peterson, 33, faces charges of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault with intent to kill while armed, among other accusations, for his alleged involvement in the shooting.

Court Proceedings

Peterson’s attorney, Gemma Stevens, raised concerns about effective assistance of counsel, leading to the rescheduling of the trial to October 21 by Judge Robert Okun. Peterson expressed his desire to proceed without Stevens as counsel, and the trial date was moved to a later time.

Peterson’s co-defense counsel, Daniel Kovler, mentioned plans to seek new co-counsel for the upcoming trial as parties prepare to return to court for a motions hearing on October 4.
