Private Parking Lot Caretaker Shot and Killed in Cebu City

A tragic incident unfolded in Sitio Cabancalan 2, Barangay Bulacao, Cebu City, as a 63-year-old caretaker of a private parking lot was gunned down by an unidentified assailant on Thursday morning, February 22, 2024.

The victim, Juan Ordeñiza, a married man residing in the area, was ambushed while returning from a nearby store where he had purchased liquor. His friend, Francisco Tabada, recounted the harrowing moment when the gunman approached Ordeñiza and fired three fatal shots, striking him in the head and back.

Authorities, led by Police Major Jeciree Basitao of the Inayawan Police Station, are currently investigating the incident, with initial findings pointing towards a personal grudge as the motive behind the attack. According to Basitao, there had been a previous altercation involving the victim and an individual over his role as the caretaker of the parking lot owned by the Aznar family.

Witnesses at the scene were able to identify the suspect, who was reportedly known to local law enforcement and had been detained at the Inayawan Police Station in the past. Basitao confirmed that a hot pursuit operation was in progress to apprehend the perpetrator.

Tabada, who was present during the shooting, claimed that he caught a glimpse of the assailant’s face but was unable to recollect it in detail. However, he expressed confidence in his ability to recognise the suspect if he were to encounter him again.

Despite the bustling activity in the vicinity, including food vendors serving customers, the sound of gunfire rang out, drawing attention to the tragic scene as Ordeñiza collapsed from his injuries. An anonymous vendor recounted the chaos that ensued following the shooting.

The victim’s younger brother, who chose to remain unnamed, mourned the loss of his sibling, describing Ordeñiza as a gentle soul with no known enemies. The Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) team recovered three spent .45 pistol shells at the crime scene, further evidence of the violent act that had taken place.

This senseless act of violence has shaken the community, prompting calls for justice and heightened security measures in the area. As the investigation unfolds, residents are left grappling with the tragic loss of a beloved member of their community.
