Authorities in the United States have made public the body-camera footage of a tragic incident where law enforcement officers fatally shot a man who was holding a plastic fork.

The incident, which occurred on 3 February in a warehouse in Los Angeles, is currently under investigation to ascertain whether the officers involved adhered to the prescribed guidelines governing the use of lethal force.

The individual who lost his life in the shooting has been identified as Jason Lee Maccani, aged 36.

The released footage depicts a tense confrontation between the man and a group of police officers in the corridors of the building.

Initially complying with the officers’ commands to approach with his arms raised, the man’s actions took a turn when he continued to advance with clenched fists, holding an object that the officers perceived to be a screwdriver.

Despite attempts to subdue him, the officers were unsuccessful in their efforts, as stated by the police in an official statement.

As the man approached the officers, gunshots rang out in the video.

The statement from the authorities read, “The suspect seized one of the officers and the Beanbag Shotgun she was carrying, leading to an Officer-Involved Shooting.”

Law enforcement personnel had responded to the warehouse following an emergency call reporting an “assault with a deadly weapon” on the premises.

The caller had alleged that the individual in question, believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was making threats towards employees with a stick.

Tragically, Mr Maccani succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Fortunately, none of the warehouse staff or police officers sustained any harm during the incident.
