Law enforcement agencies arrest suspect involved in malicious social media campaign against CJP Qazi Faez Isa
Law enforcement agencies in Islamabad have successfully apprehended a suspect allegedly responsible for carrying out a malicious and threatening social media campaign against Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa. The suspect, identified as Abdul Wasay, is said to have misused the platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to malign and issue death threats to the Chief Justice.
Abdul Wasay is believed to have played a significant role in orchestrating a social media campaign aimed at defaming Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Sources have revealed that investigations are currently ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the said social media campaign against the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Earlier in January, the caretaker government took action by forming a joint investigation team (JIT) to look into the campaign that was reportedly launched against the judiciary following a Supreme Court verdict that upheld a decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the iconic symbol of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
The JIT, comprised of representatives from various agencies including the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), has been tasked with uncovering the truth behind the alleged malicious social media campaign and bringing the culprits to justice in accordance with the law. The team has also been empowered to recommend preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Following the verdict by the CJP Qazi Faez Isa-led bench, the PTI party has been dealt a significant blow as its candidates will now be contesting the elections independently with different electoral symbols. Furthermore, the party no longer holds the right to reserved seats for women and minorities.
The caretaker government has instructed the JIT to submit a preliminary report to the Ministry of Interior within 15 days, highlighting the seriousness with which the matter is being treated. The efforts to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and prevent any further attacks on the reputation of judges continue to be a top priority for the authorities.
