The Tragic Incident in Santa Ana
In a shocking turn of events, a man was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2017 killing of Mariano Labra Ramos in Santa Ana. Alexis Ascencion, 25, mistakenly identified Ramos as a rival gang member and fatally shot him near his home on the 1900 block of W. Myrtle Street.

The Deadly Shooting
The incident occurred on December 1, 2017, when Ascencion, accompanied by fellow gang member Felix Martinez Vargas and two unidentified teens, drove into rival gang territory. Ascencion got out of the vehicle and opened fire on Ramos and another man in a walkway before fleeing the scene with his accomplices.
Arrest and Investigation
Responding officers found Ramos with multiple gunshot wounds to his leg. Despite efforts to save him, he later succumbed to his injuries at a local trauma center. It was later revealed that Ramos and the other man were innocent residents of the neighborhood, mistakenly targeted by Ascencion and his associates.
The following day, Ascencion, Vargas, and the two teens were arrested by the Santa Ana Police Department. It was a long and arduous legal process that finally culminated in Ascencion’s trial more than six years later.
Verdict and Sentencing
After a two-week trial, a jury found Ascencion guilty of first-degree murder with enhancements for using a firearm and committing the crime for the benefit of a gang. He is currently in custody awaiting sentencing, scheduled for April 5.

Justice for Mariano Labra Ramos
Ascencion is the third individual involved in Ramos’ killing to be convicted in a court of law. Vargas, identified as the driver of the getaway car, was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter, while one of the teens was convicted of attempted murder. The verdict brings a sense of closure and justice to the tragic loss of Mariano Labra Ramos.
