Two Young Adults Arrested in Lowell After Early Morning Gunfire

LOWELL — An investigation into early-morning gunfire in South Lowell on Sunday led to the arrest of two young adults, as well as the seizure of a .45-caliber handgun and marijuana believed to be intended for distribution.

According to a report from the Lowell Police Department, officers responded to the area of Morton and Epping streets just before 2:50 a.m. following multiple reports of gunshots in the vicinity.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials discovered three “movie prop” $100 bills on the ground, alongside a spent shell casing. While securing the scene, an officer encountered a vehicle with Marcus Rosa, 19, and Shayla Cordero, 18, both residents of Lowell, inside. The officer noted that Cordero appeared to be concealing something.

“I inquired as to what she was attempting to conceal and received no response,” the report stated.

The officer observed plastic sandwich bags scattered in the back seat of the vehicle, along with a bag of marijuana. Additionally, a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 45 handgun was visible in a black bag on the passenger side. The firearm had a 10-round magazine with multiple rounds and no chambered rounds, as per police reports.

In addition to the marijuana and bags, a digital scale was also found inside the vehicle. The exact quantity of marijuana was not disclosed in the reports.

During the investigation, three juveniles on foot and another vehicle leaving the area were stopped by police, but no weapons were found. The juveniles mentioned that there had been a party on Morton Street.

Both Cordero and Rosa were arraigned in Lowell District Court by Judge John Coffey on Tuesday. Cordero faces charges of possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. Her bail was set at £1,500, which was posted. Cordero is scheduled to appear in court on April 18.

The status of Rosa’s arraignment was not immediately disclosed.
