In a small village in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, a tragic incident unfolded on Friday, February 2nd, involving law enforcement officers and a suspect. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently looking into the details of what transpired that evening.

The Sequence of Events

At around 9:40 p.m., North Fond du Lac Police Department Sergeant Bryce LaLuzerne, a seasoned officer with five years of experience, pulled over a vehicle in the Village of North Fond du Lac. The situation escalated quickly when the vehicle fled the scene, prompting a pursuit that led onto Interstate 41 in Winnebago County.

As the chase unfolded, a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy strategically deployed a tire deflation device near County Hwy Z, forcing the vehicle to come to a halt. The driver, later identified as Lawrence M. Drennan, aged 36, made a distress call to 911, claiming to be armed.

The Fatal Outcome

Drennan exited the vehicle and approached the law enforcement officers. In the heat of the moment, Sergeant LaLuzerne fired his weapon, striking Drennan. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Drennan succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained any injuries during the encounter. Sergeant LaLuzerne has been placed on administrative duty as per department protocol.

The Ongoing Investigation

Both the North Fond du Lac Police Department and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office had cameras recording the incident. The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is spearheading the inquiry with the support of various agencies, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, and DCI Crime Response Specialists.
