Man Who died in Police Custody in Largo, MD identified

A tragic incident unfolded in Largo, Maryland, on Feb. 16 when a man died while in police custody. The man has been identified as 61-year-old Joseph Holmes of Clinton.

Details of the Incident

It all began at around 7:45 p.m. when officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a suspicious person knocking on doors in the 10700 block of Lake Arbor Way in Largo. Upon arrival, an officer found the man in the road, who then walked onto a nearby lawn and laid down. The officer called for an ambulance and two more officers arrived at the scene. The man was placed in handcuffs for transportation to a hospital for evaluation.

Unfortunately, the man went into medical distress after being handcuffed. Despite immediate emergency aid from the officers, the man was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after.

Officers Involved

The officers involved in the incident have been identified as Corporal Alyssa Tomaselli, a veteran of 11 years; Corporal Mark Price, with 9 years of experience; and Officer Marvin Marks, with 2 years in the department and a total of 30 years in law enforcement. All officers are part of the Bureau of Patrol.

Officer Andre Brooks from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Police Department, a 7-year veteran with a total of 34 years of law enforcement experience, was also present at the scene.

Investigation Ongoing

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death. Body-worn cameras worn by the officers recorded the incident, and the footage will be released within 20 business days.
