Former LAPD Officer Faces Charges for Theft
LOS ANGELES — A former Los Angeles Police Department officer, Edmond Babaians, is set to appear in court on Friday for allegedly stealing debit and credit cards from individuals while conducting searches at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown LA.
Charged with three felony counts and one misdemeanor count of unlawful use of access cards, Babaians, 43, was apprehended last August following an investigation by the LAPD Internal Affairs Division.
Assigned to the Metropolitan Detention Center in November 2018, Babaians’ responsibilities included inspecting personal items of visitors to the jail facility.
Prosecutors claim that in July of last year, Babaians pilfered debit and credit cards from four individuals passing through the security checkpoint. He allegedly used the stolen cards to make multiple purchases.

If convicted, Babaians could face up to five years and four months behind bars, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Upon receiving reports of a missing debit card and unauthorised transactions, LAPD officials initiated an investigation. The victim managed to obtain images of the individual using her stolen card at a hardware store and shared the pictures with the LAPD. The culprit was identified as Babaians.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore expressed his dismay, stating, “The allegations of an officer betraying public trust are deeply troubling and demand accountability.”
Mayor Karen Bass echoed similar sentiments, asserting, “Our police officers must be held to the highest standards of integrity. I commend Chief Moore and the LAPD leadership for promptly addressing this serious issue. Upholding the integrity of our police force is paramount, and we must continue to operate with transparency and accountability to foster trust with all residents of Los Angeles.”
While Babaians was a veteran of the department with 16 years of service, prosecutors confirmed that he is no longer affiliated with the LAPD.
