Keavy Man Released from Hospital and Booked into Jail

A Keavy man, identified as Dylan S. Southerland, 31, who was involved in an officer-involved shooting incident on February 4 in Laurel County, has been released from the University of Kentucky Medical Center and is now in police custody. Southerland was transported to the Laurel County Correctional Center where he was booked on four counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Alleged Shooting Incident

The incident took place on Brannon Mill Road in Laurel County, where London Police Department officers attempted to stop Southerland’s vehicle for suspicion of impaired driving. The vehicle failed to stop, leading to a 13-14 minute pursuit involving officers from both the London Police Department and the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

During the chase, Southerland allegedly brandished a handgun and fired multiple shots in the direction of the officers. The pursuit finally came to an end when the vehicle left the roadway and stopped in a residential area on Brannon Mill Road. Southerland then exited the vehicle and continued to fire shots at the officers.

Officer-Involved Shooting

Both the London Police Department and the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department officers responded by discharging their weapons, striking Southerland. Despite being injured, officers were able to take Southerland into custody and administer first-aid until EMS arrived at the scene.

KSP Investigation

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 11 troopers and detectives were called in to investigate the incident. KSP has statewide jurisdiction to handle officer-involved shootings throughout the Commonwealth, as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
