Cambridge, NH – On the night of Saturday, February 17, 2024, New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers received a report of a snowmobile accident on Corridor Trail 12 in Cambridge. The incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m., prompting an emergency response from the Errol Fire and EMS Department.

The individual involved in the crash was identified as 49-year-old Shantelle Sutkus from Weare, NH. Sutkus was travelling south on Corridor Trail 12 when she encountered a sled dog team heading in the opposite direction. Unable to safely slow down her snowmobile, Sutkus made a split-second decision to slide her vehicle sideways in order to avoid colliding with other members of her riding group. Unfortunately, this manoeuvre resulted in Sutkus being thrown from the snowmobile.

Upon assessing Sutkus’s injuries, her companions quickly contacted emergency services for assistance. Sutkus was carefully placed on a litter and transported down the trail with the assistance of the Errol Fire Department’s rescue Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV). She was then transferred to an awaiting ambulance from Errol, which transported her to Androscoggin Valley Hospital (AVH) in Berlin for further medical attention.

While the investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, preliminary findings suggest that inattention and excessive speed were significant contributing factors. New Hampshire Fish and Game urges all snowmobilers to exercise caution and be mindful of other trail users while enjoying the sport.

As the winter season continues, it is crucial for snowmobile enthusiasts to prioritise safety and adhere to trail regulations to prevent accidents and injuries. Stay informed and follow guidelines provided by local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the snow-covered trails of New Hampshire.
