Tragic Discovery of Missing IIT JEE Aspirant’s Body in Chambal Valley
Authorities in Rajasthan have confirmed the heartbreaking recovery of the body of a 16-year-old IIT JEE aspirant after an exhaustive week-long search in the Chambal valley. The teenager, identified as Rachit Sondhiya, hails from Madhya Pradesh and is pursuing his studies in Kota, a renowned coaching hub attracting students nationwide. This tragic incident marks the fifth student death in Kota this year.

Sondhiya had been missing since February 11, with the last known footage capturing him entering the forest area near Garadia Mahadev temple. He had left his hostel premises under the pretext of attending an exam, sparking a frantic search by his worried parents and authorities alike.
Despite the relentless efforts involving the State Disaster Response Force, sniffer dogs, and drones, the search for Sondhiya remained fruitless until his body was discovered nearly nine days later. The remote section of the Chambal valley where his body was found suggests the possibility that he may have taken a fatal plunge from the hills into the valley below.
With approximately 200,000 students flocking to Kota every year, many facing the challenges of living away from home for the first time, concerns over student well-being have been mounting. The previous four student deaths this year were attributed to suicides, adding to the grim statistics of 26 deaths by suicide reported in the coaching hub last year, the highest ever witnessed in the city.
Government Initiatives to Address Student Well-being
This tragic incident has prompted the central government to issue guidelines aimed at alleviating the pressures faced by coaching students. Measures have been put in place to prioritize the mental health and emotional well-being of students, with directives issued to coaching institutes and district administrations.

Among the newly announced guidelines by the Ministry of Education, coaching centres are now prohibited from enrolling students below the age of 16. Admission procedures are required to be implemented only following the successful completion of secondary school examinations, in a bid to ensure the safety and well-being of young aspirants.
As the community mourns the loss of yet another promising young life, the focus remains on implementing effective strategies to support the mental health and overall well-being of students in Kota and beyond.
