Man Accused of Shooting Blount County Deputy Faces Preliminary Hearing

Details of the Incident

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. – The man accused of shooting and killing Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg McCowan is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

Kenneth Wayne DeHart has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felon in possession of a weapon in relation to a shooting in the 4900 block of Sevierville Road that resulted in McCowan’s death and another deputy, Shelby Eggers, being injured on February 8.

The preliminary hearing began with the public defender appointed to DeHart requesting more time for DeHart to hire an attorney, which was denied, and the hearing proceeded.

Testimony and Capture

During the preliminary hearing, Eggers testified about her history with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office and recounted the events of the traffic stop on February 8.

DeHart was captured at a home in Knoxville after a nearly five-day search. Security footage shows DeHart exiting the residence through a back door following loud noises.

DeHart was arraigned at the Blount County Justice Center on February 15. His brother, Marcus DeHart, and his girlfriend, Carrie Matthews, were charged as accessories after the fact in connection to the case. Maurice Donnell Warren has also been accused of aiding DeHart and charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Upcoming Court Dates

DeHart’s next court appearance is set for March 25, while Matthews’s next court date is scheduled for March 15. Warren’s preliminary hearing has been set for March 5.
