When firefighters responded to a call about a gas smell at a home in Sterling, Virginia, little did they know the tragic turn of events that would follow. The incident took place in this quiet suburb, located just 22 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.
Discovery of Underground Propane Tank
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered a 500-gallon underground propane tank with a leak on the side of the residence. The situation quickly escalated when the house exploded, sending flames and debris everywhere.

Despite heroic efforts by the first responders, one firefighter, identified as 45-year-old Trevor Brown, lost his life in the explosion. Brown, a volunteer with Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, left behind a grieving family and colleagues who considered him a beloved member of their firefighting family.

Alongside the tragic loss of Trevor Brown, 10 other firefighters sustained injuries in the blast. Four of them remained in hospitals, with varying degrees of injuries, but are expected to survive, according to Loudoun Fire and Rescue System Chief Keith Johnson. The remaining first responders were also treated for minor injuries.
