Authorities have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Torraize Armstrong. The chase began after police received reports of a drive-by shooting in the area. Detective Steve Byrnes, a 16-year-veteran on the Chester police force, responded to the call and attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle.

According to reports, Armstrong got out of the car on West 14th Street and Arbor Drive and started firing at officers. In the exchange of gunfire that followed, Armstrong was struck multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Officer Byrnes Recovering at Home

Officer Byrnes, who was injured in the shooting, was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Initial reports suggested he had been shot twice, but it was later clarified that he was wearing a tactical vest that protected him from one of the bullets.

Police Chief Steven Gretsky provided an update on Byrnes’ condition, stating that the officer has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home with his family.
