Man in Custody in Connection with Toddler’s Death at UAB Medical Center West

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A man has been taken into custody in connection with a homicide investigation after a tragic incident at UAB Medical Center West over the weekend.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), deputies were called to the emergency room of UAB Medical Center West at around 8:15 p.m. on Friday. They were responding to a report of a child who had been brought in with multiple bodily injuries.

The toddler, identified as 19-month-old Gabriel Alonso, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

JCSO detectives and investigators from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office were immediately called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding Alonso’s death. Based on their findings, the case is now being treated as a homicide.

Suspect in Custody

27-year-old Oscar Espinoza Guadarrama, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, has been taken into custody in connection with the case. Guadarrama is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer without bond.

Evidence gathered from the investigation will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in Bessemer. The District Attorney’s Office will then determine the charges to be brought against Guadarrama in relation to the death of young Gabriel Alonso.
