Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed the need for the commission to thoroughly investigate the use of Pegasus in order to dispel any uncertainties surrounding the issue. However, a PiS member of the commission defended the use of surveillance software by security services to combat criminal activities.

The commission rejected requests to question certain witnesses proposed by PiS, including the former head of the Central Anticorruption Bureau and a prominent prosecutor critical of PiS’s judicial changes. Reports suggest that several PiS politicians were themselves targeted by Pegasus during their time in power.

The investigation follows previous findings by European Parliament and Polish Senate inquiries, which concluded that the use of Pegasus by the PiS government was illegal and unfair, particularly during the 2019 elections. In a separate case, a court ruled against state broadcaster TVP for publishing private messages obtained through Pegasus, highlighting concerns over media manipulation during PiS’s rule.

As the commission delves deeper into the Pegasus scandal, it aims to bring transparency to the controversial use of surveillance technology in Polish politics.
