Man Arrested in Monroe After Shooting Incident at Lazarre Park
A man was taken into custody in Monroe on February 18 following a shooting incident at Lazarre Park earlier that day. The West Monroe Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at the park around 12:30 p.m.

Details of the Incident
Upon arriving at Lazarre Park, officers discovered a male and female victim at the scene. A witness provided crucial information about the suspected shooter, identified as Willie Earl Townes, Jr., and the vehicle he was driving.
The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle on Berg Jones Lane in Monroe. The driver, later confirmed to be the suspected shooter, pulled into a driveway. At that point, he held two individuals hostage at gunpoint inside the vehicle.
Resolution of the Situation
Law enforcement officers engaged in negotiation with the suspect, eventually convincing him to surrender as the OPSO SWAT team arrived on the scene. Thankfully, the two hostages were unharmed during the ordeal.
Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered suspected PCP, crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm. Townes was apprehended on multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, and drug possession.

Tragic Outcome
Sadly, on February 19, the female victim from the shooting at Lazarre Park succumbed to her injuries. As a result, one of Townes’ charges of attempted murder will be upgraded. The male victim remains in critical condition at this time.
The identities of the victims have not been released to the public. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community safety and vigilance in preventing such tragedies.
