Two individuals sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Kingston

Following their conviction for the murder of a man in Kingston, two individuals have been handed life sentences after detectives uncovered CCTV footage linking them to the brutal attack.

Sean Deery, aged 28 and of no fixed address, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years. Sebastian Niven, aged 18 and residing in Sugden Road, Thames Ditton, has also received a life sentence with a minimum of 14 years behind bars. Niven can now be named after reaching the age of 18, as reporting restrictions have been lifted.

The Old Bailey trial, which took place in December, resulted in the conviction of both individuals. They were subsequently sentenced at the same court on Monday, 19 February.

The jury heard how the victim, Farhad Khalili, was brutally attacked at approximately 19:00hrs on 15 December 2021 while walking along Surbiton Crescent in Kingston. Deery and Niven, then a 15-year-old boy, ambushed and assaulted Farhad near the junction of Anglesea Road.

Farhad sustained multiple stab wounds and managed to make his way to Surbiton Road before collapsing. Despite the efforts of emergency services, including the police, London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance, Farhad tragically passed away at the scene.

A swift review of CCTV footage identified Deery and Niven as the attackers. Deery had been apprehended following a mistaken identity in a separate robbery incident on Portsmouth Road, Kingston, just prior to the attack on Farhad.

Niven attempted to flee on foot but was later arrested at his residence the following day. Incriminating evidence in the form of blood-stained clothing was discovered, linking him to the assault on Farhad.

During their time in custody, both Deery and Niven opted to remain silent during police questioning. However, the compelling evidence against them led to charges of murder being brought against both individuals.

Detective Inspector Jim Barry, from the Specialist Crime Command, remarked:

“While there was a prior acquaintance between Farhad and his assailants, the motive behind the violent attack remains unclear.

“What is evident is the extreme brutality and intent displayed by Deery and Niven in causing significant harm to Farhad.

“The prompt actions of all parties involved, including responding officers and the local community, were pivotal in swiftly identifying and apprehending the suspects.

“The sentencing of Deery and Niven for Farhad’s murder offers a semblance of closure to his bereaved family and friends, who have been grappling with the tragic aftermath of this incident.”
