Elmer Smith Charged with Kidnapping and More in Southaven, Mississippi Incident

A man has been identified as the suspect in a kidnapping case that occurred in Southaven, Mississippi. Elmer Smith, 37 years old, is facing multiple charges including kidnapping, domestic violence, evading arrest, driving offenses, and reckless endangerment.

The incident took place on February 15, when the MMS Task Force received information that Smith was in the area of East Parkway and Barton Street. He was driving a black 2023 Toyota 4Runner with a victim inside.

Smith had an active warrant from Southaven, Mississippi, as well as domestic violence assault warrants from Shelby County, Tennessee. Police located the vehicle downtown and attempted a traffic stop, leading to a pursuit when Smith refused to pull over.

During the chase, Smith drove erratically, going into oncoming traffic, swerving across lanes, running red lights, and eventually crashing into a fence in Whitehaven on Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley Boulevard. He attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after.

The victim, found in the passenger seat with minor injuries, declined medical treatment. Smith was taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
