Football Coach Arrested for Murder of Girlfriend in Maryland

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – In a shocking turn of events, Carl Kearney, Jr., the head football coach at Spalding High School in Griffin, Spalding County, has been arrested in connection with the murder of his girlfriend in Maryland. The Prince George’s County Police Department confirmed the arrest on Saturday.

Kearney, a 43-year-old resident of Griffin, walked into the Division V Clinton police station and confessed to officers that he had strangled his girlfriend that morning at her Accokeek home. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Patrina Best, was found unresponsive by officers who responded to the home located in the 800 block of St. James Court. Best was pronounced dead at the scene.

During questioning by detectives, Kearney admitted to strangling the victim during an argument. He now faces charges of first and second-degree murder along with related offenses. The Homicide Unit at 301-516-2512 is seeking any further information on this case.

Kearney, who played football for Georgia Southern University in the early 2000s, has been credited with turning around the football program at Spalding High School. His coaching efforts were recently recognized with the Georgia High School Football Daily’s Class 4A coaches award for the most improved winning team in Class 4A.
