Two Arrested for Poaching Attempt in Nilgiris

Two individuals were apprehended by authorities at the Nadugani check post in the Nilgiris on Sunday morning, following a routine vehicle inspection. The suspects, identified as P. Mani (52) and M. Sasikumar (39) hailing from Devala Hatty in Pandiyar, were found in possession of a country-made rifle and six bullets.

Upon further interrogation, it was revealed that Mani and Sasikumar had acquired the firearm and ammunition from individuals in Kerala with the intention of engaging in illegal poaching activities. The duo reportedly purchased the weapon for a sum of ₹ 1.2 lakh.

Subsequent to the discovery, the police confiscated the rifle and bullets and proceeded to charge the culprits under the Arms Act and The Explosive Substances Act, resulting in their incarceration. Additionally, a case has been filed against the suppliers in Kerala, with law enforcement currently pursuing their whereabouts.

Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation in collaboration with the Forest Department to ascertain any potential connections between the arrested individuals and recent poaching incidents in Gudalur and Pandalur.
