The incident took place on February 16, 2024, at around 11:27 p.m., when troopers were alerted to two individuals dressed in all black trying to break into vehicles in the neighbourhood of Nobles Pond Crossing in Dover. Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement officers spotted a Kia Sorento with a shattered window parked in a driveway on Winding Carriage Lane. It was evident that the rear passenger window had been shattered, and the ignition had been tampered with, consistent with the method used in a nationwide trend of Kia thefts involving a screwdriver and a USB cable.

While conducting a search of the area, a trooper caught sight of two individuals in all black walking at the intersection of Colt Lane and Peacock Place. Upon attempting to approach them, the suspects fled in a southeast direction on Peacock Place. Despite multiple verbal commands to stop, the suspects continued to evade the authorities. Ultimately, one of the suspects, identified as the 13-year-old teenager, complied and was apprehended without any further incident. Shortly after, the second suspect, identified as the 14-year-old teenager, was spotted running on Station View Drive and was also taken into custody without any resistance. During a search of the suspects, troopers found them in possession of a screwdriver and a USB cable.

The teenagers were then taken to Troop 9 where they were formally charged with several felony offenses. These charges include Possession of Burglar Tools (Felony), Attempted Theft of a Motor Vehicle (Felony), Conspiracy Second Degree (Felony), Criminal Mischief, Resisting Arrest, and Tampering with a Vehicle. Subsequently, both teenagers were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and were released into the custody of their parents.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in residential areas and the need for communities to work together to prevent criminal activities such as theft and vandalism. The prompt response of the Delaware State Police in apprehending the suspects demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the local residents..
