Rivers State Police Confirm Arrest of Paragon Clinics Manager in Connection with Death of First-Class Graduate

The Rivers State Police Command has officially announced the arrest of the manager of Paragon Clinics and Imaging Diagnosis, a private healthcare facility situated along Stadium Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

This development comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation following the tragic passing of Rebekah Sekidika, a distinguished Micro Biology graduate from Benson Idahosa University in Benin City, Edo State, at the aforementioned hospital.

The bereaved father, Sampson Sekidika, shared with PUNCH Metro that his daughter met her untimely demise during a medical procedure at the facility on February 2, 2024.

Expressing his dismay, Sekidika pointed fingers at the medical personnel responsible for his daughter’s care, stating that she did not require surgical intervention.

He recounted how he personally accompanied Rebekah to the clinic, emphasizing that she was in good health and devoid of any medical concerns. The purpose of the visit was to conduct tests due to delayed menstruation before her planned overseas trip.

“The concern was her irregular menstrual cycle. She needed clarification on the issue. During her consultation, various tests were performed, including a pregnancy test which yielded negative results.

“However, she was advised to see a specialist for further evaluation. On the scheduled day, she was taken into the operating theatre and administered anaesthesia for a minor procedure that did not necessitate surgery, leading to complications that ultimately claimed her life,” the grieving father narrated to PUNCH Metro.

Rebekah, who had been gearing up for her Master’s and PhD programmes in the United Kingdom, had all arrangements in place, from flight bookings to tuition payments, ready for her academic pursuit.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, verified the arrest of the clinic manager during a conversation with our correspondent on Sunday.

Iringe-Koko expressed disappointment over the failure of the doctor and the anaesthetist to honour an earlier police invitation for questioning.

“Yes, I can confirm the detention of the manager. We have also extended invitations to the doctor and another individual as part of our investigative process,” she confirmed.

She further disclosed that the case had been referred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for a thorough probe.

Moreover, two other individuals who were apprehended in connection with the incident have since been released, as their roles at the facility were found to have no direct involvement in the tragic event.
