Legal Ramifications of Defilement

Defilement is a serious offence under Nigerian criminal law, with severe penalties for perpetrators. Legal practitioner and human rights lawyer, Collins Aigbogun, explained in an exclusive interview that individuals convicted of defilement risk facing life imprisonment.

Aigbogun emphasised, “The issue of defilement is not merely a constitutional matter but falls within the realm of criminal jurisprudence. Any individual found guilty of defiling a girl under the age of 13 is considered to have committed a felony and could be sentenced to life imprisonment. Ogun and Lagos states share similar laws in this regard.”

Conclusion

These recent arrests underscore the commitment of the Ogun State Police Command to combatting sexual offences and ensuring justice for survivors. The swift actions taken in these cases serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding the law and protecting vulnerable members of society.
