Sheriff Dan Limoges : “Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges Memorial Service: Honoring a Hero”

(KTIV) – On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the community of Elk Point, South Dakota, was saddened by the unexpected passing of longtime Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges. At 64 years old, Limoges had been serving as the sheriff for over 30 years, making a lasting impact on the region.

People from all over are gathering in Elk Point to honor and remember Limoges’s legacy. A memorial service to celebrate his life and service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. The service will be a time for the community to come together and pay their respects to a dedicated public servant.

During the service, there will be no parking on Main Street in Elk Point between Grant Street and Corydon Drive. This temporary closure is in place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday to allow for Sheriff Limoges’s funeral procession.

Legacy of Sheriff Dan Limoges

At the time of his passing, Sheriff Limoges had dedicated 33 years of service to Union County. He began his law enforcement career in 1985 as a patrol officer in Alcester, South Dakota, before joining the Union County Sheriff’s Office in 1989. Just two years later, he was elected as the sheriff and continued to be reelected throughout his tenure.

Throughout his time as sheriff, Limoges and his deputies were involved in numerous high-profile cases that made headlines across Siouxland. In 2004, the Union County Sheriff’s Office investigated the tragic death of a newborn child, known as “Baby Moses,” whose body was found in the trash. The mother, Lori Schultz, was later charged with murder and sentenced to ten years in prison for manslaughter.

In 2013, Limoges and his team were involved in the discovery of two bodies in Brule Creek, leading to the resolution of a decades-old disappearance case involving two Vermillion teens. In 2014, the Sheriff’s Office assisted in the apprehension of a murder suspect in Yankton, South Dakota, highlighting Limoges’s dedication to keeping the community safe.

Limoges’s impact went beyond solving crimes. He served as the president of the South Dakota Sheriff’s Association and played a crucial role in preserving Union County’s 911 Communication Center. His commitment to public service extended to helping neighboring communities with law enforcement issues, demonstrating his dedication to the well-being of the region.
