The City of Los Angeles Takes Action to Clean Up Graffiti Towers in Downtown

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The city of Los Angeles is now taking matters into its own hands to clean up the now-famous “graffiti towers” in downtown.

Resolution Passed by City Council

Following the City Council’s resolution last week, the owners of Oceanwide Plaza have been called upon to remove the extensive graffiti covering the 27-story complex. Additionally, they are required to remove the scaffolding obstructing sidewalks and secure the property from further vandalism.

Deadline Missed, City Steps In

Despite the deadline passing, the owners failed to initiate the cleanup, prompting the city to take action. An allocated budget of $3.8 million will fund the removal of graffiti and the construction of a custom metal barrier around the site to prevent unauthorized access.

Enhanced Security Measures

Councilman Kevin de León highlighted the importance of the metal barrier, emphasizing its height of at least 10 feet to deter individuals from climbing the structure. Private security will be hired to monitor the area, reducing the burden on law enforcement.

Future Plans for the Site

Discussions are underway regarding potential actions if the owners do not comply with the cleanup. There is reportedly strong interest in purchasing the property to address the ongoing issues.

Recent Arrests at the Site

In recent weeks, several individuals were arrested for trespassing at the location. The suspects, identified as Sebastian Gutierrez, Andrew Rios, Mauro Aguilar, and Jessie Carreon, faced legal consequences for their actions.

This proactive approach by the city demonstrates a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the urban landscape and ensuring public safety in downtown Los Angeles.
