Charleston Businessman Arrested for DUI in Isle of Palms

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCSC) – A prominent Charleston businessman, Michael Gianoni, 63, was arrested for DUI first offense during a routine traffic stop in Isle of Palms on Friday. Gianoni, who serves as the president and CEO of Blackbaud, a Charleston-based software provider specializing in social impact, was taken into custody by Isle of Palms Police.

According to Charleston County jail records, the incident occurred around 1:53 a.m. when an Isle of Palms Police officer observed Gianoni driving a Mercedes SUV with its high beams on in the area of Palm Boulevard and the IOP Connector. The officer noticed Gianoni crossing over the white fog line and failing to use a turn signal while changing lanes, prompting a traffic stop.

Upon approaching Gianoni, the officer detected a strong smell of alcohol emanating from his breath. Subsequent standardized field sobriety tests indicated that Gianoni was unfit to drive due to impairment. Despite being asked to take a breathalyzer test, Gianoni refused.

Following his arrest, Gianoni was taken to the Isle of Palms Police Department before being booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center. He was later released on a $992 PR bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 24 to face the charges.
