Authorities were called to 693 Bruce Drive in Paramus at 5:40 p.m. on Friday following a report of a possible homicide. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of 61-year-old Manuel Thomas in the basement of the home, with multiple stab wounds. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene by officials.

Shortly after the discovery of the body, 32-year-old Melvin Thomas was identified as a suspect and taken into custody. Melvin has since been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree desecration of human remains, second-degree hindering, and two possession of a weapon charges, according to prosecutors.

While the district attorney’s office did not disclose the relationship between the victim and the defendant, a neighbour informed Northjersey.com that a father and son resided in the home together. Property records obtained by NJ reveal that Manuel is the registered owner of the property where his body was found.

As the investigation continues, the defendant remains in custody at Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance.
