Douglas County Man Arrested After Fatal Crash Leaves One Dead, Three Injured

A tragic incident unfolded in Douglas County, Nebraska, early Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality and three individuals sustaining serious injuries following a collision. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) swiftly responded to the scene and apprehended a man in connection with the devastating crash.

Details of the Incident

According to reports from DCSO, the incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. in the vicinity of 168th Street and Pawnee Road. The preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck travelling northbound on 168th Street failed to adhere to a four-way stop sign and proceeded onto Pawnee Road. Simultaneously, a Subaru heading westbound on Pawnee/Highway 36 collided with the pickup truck at the intersection.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported four individuals to Nebraska Medicine with severe injuries. Tragically, one of the injured persons succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at the hospital. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed as authorities are in the process of notifying their next of kin.

Driver Arrested for Impairment

The driver of the pickup truck exhibited signs of impairment, prompting DCSO deputies to initiate a driving under the influence (DUI) investigation. Subsequent tests, including a breathalyzer assessment, confirmed that the driver had a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit.

The pickup truck driver, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Kuhl from Carter Lake, was treated for his injuries and subsequently taken into custody at Douglas County Corrections. Kuhl now faces a slew of charges, including motor vehicle homicide, two counts of DUI resulting in serious injury, and a DUI charge with two prior convictions.

Utility Crews Respond

In addition to law enforcement personnel, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) crews were dispatched to the crash site due to the disconnection of power lines. The exact connection between the power line issue and the collision remains unclear at this time.
