The incident, which occurred near the Sprott Street exit in the eastbound lanes of the highway, involved a high-speed collision between an SUV and a white Tesla.

Burnaby RCMP officers swiftly responded to the scene of the crash at 3:40 a.m. Video footage from the location captured the aftermath of the collision, showing the severe impact on both vehicles. Tragically, one woman lost her life in the crash, while two other female passengers sustained critical injuries.
According to Cpl. Mike Kalanj, the collision occurred when a vehicle with four passengers had pulled over and stopped on the side of the highway near the Sprott Street off-ramp. Subsequently, an SUV travelling in the same direction collided with the stationary vehicle, resulting in the devastating crash.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found one female passenger deceased, while the other three occupants were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was released from the scene. Authorities have ruled out impairment as a contributing factor to the collision.
As investigations continue, drivers travelling eastbound on Highway 1 in the affected area should anticipate delays throughout Sunday morning. The BC Coroner Service is on-site to gather information and determine the cause of the tragic incident.
