Homeless Man Arrested for Setting Fire to Lawrence Apartment

A man who is homeless from Kansas City has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to an apartment in Lawrence following a break-in. The incident took place at an apartment complex just south of Sandra Shaw Park on W. 2nd St. on Friday, Feb. 16.

The Lawrence Police Department received a call around 5:30 p.m. reporting a burglary at the apartment complex. Upon arrival, emergency crews found that the suspect, identified as Trong D. Turner, 27, from Kansas City, Missouri, had broken into the victim’s unit by climbing in through a window and had caused damage to the property.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they attempted to persuade Turner to leave the apartment, which he eventually did. However, police noticed smoke and flames coming from the apartment as they apprehended the suspect. The complex was evacuated, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Turner was taken into custody and booked into the Douglas County jail around 6:55 p.m. He faces charges of aggravated arson and burglary. His address was listed as Faith Hope Homeless Camp in Kansas City, Missouri. As of 7:15 a.m. the next day, he remained in jail with no bond listed.

Court records also revealed that Turner is a suspect in another case involving vandalism. He has been charged with four counts of criminal damage to property for an incident that occurred on Dec. 31. A status conference for this case has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on March 13.

Residents in the area are shocked by the incident and are grateful that no one was harmed. The Lawrence Police Department is continuing its investigation into the matter to ensure the safety and security of the community.
