Driver and Helper Arrested in Connection with Fatal Road Accident in Mymensingh Sadar

Police early yesterday arrested the driver and helper of a bus from Sherpur’s Jhenaigati upazila in connection with a road accident in Mymensingh Sadar upazila on Friday morning that claimed the lives of seven people. The arrestees were identified as Sirajul Islam, 45, the driver of Adil Sarker Paribahan bus, and its supervisor, Jafor Miya Jony, 42, of Sherpur town.

Basir Ahmed Badal, officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station, stated that a team of police conducted a drive in the district and apprehended the duo from the Bandhabhatpara area of the upazila’s Sadar union around 12:00 am. Subsequently, the arrestees were transferred to Kotwali Model Police Station in Mymensingh for further investigation.

During their interrogation at the police station, it was revealed that the driver could not produce a valid license. Additionally, the authorities were unable to immediately verify whether the bus possessed valid registration and fitness certificates. As a result, the matter remains under investigation.

The fatal accident occurred in the Alalpur area of Mymensingh Sadar upazila on the Mymensingh-Sherpur Highway around 11:00 am. The collision involved a bus and a CNG-run autorickshaw, resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives. Among the victims was a family of three—a couple and their eight-year-old son—who were en route to a relative’s funeral.

Initially, the police seized the bus, but the driver and supervisor managed to flee the scene. However, they were later apprehended and brought to justice. Following their court appearance in Mymensingh, both individuals were remanded to jail.
